Minimum wage | Domestic workers struggling to keep up
JOHANNESBURG - Domestic workers are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living in the country.
That's according to recent Consumer Price Index data published by Stats SA this week.
It shows domestic worker wage increases in South Africa are tracking far below headline inflation.
The United Domestic Workers of South Africa says efforts are in place to assist struggling domestic workers.
"It is the sad truth that domestic workers are getting poorer as time goes on and the sad part is that not all employers cannot afford to pay the national minimum wage," said Pinky Mashiane.

"Some employers don't recognise laws that are covering domestic workers because of not seeing labour inspectors knocking at their doors and checking if they're complying with the law.
"It is very sad and difficult for domestic workers, that's why we're trying to find some people or any organisations to assist us to have skills development programmes for domestic workers so that they can do something extra to increase their salaries."
