It is concerned about the number of recalls.

South Africa’s auto industry is battling faulty parts and supplier issues.

Big brands like Nissan, BMW,  Stellantis, Toyota, and Ford have all been affected, with problems ranging from misfiring airbags and faulty seat belts to braking systems.

Stellantis is back in the spotlight as it has recalled 323 Jeep Wranglers over potential airbag failures, while Kia has recalled 18-600 Kia vehicles due to defective ABS fuses.

Prudence Moilwa from the National Consumer Commission spoke about punitive measures taken against companies who do not follow recall procedures.

She said, "We've obviously found in the past that proper processes was not followed. We indeed had to agree on a very steep fine to ensure that it serves as a deterrent for other suppliers."

Moilwa said the organisation's recent report will investigate if suppliers have acted in disregard of consumer rights and take action against them.
