NUM challenges De Beers over Venetia Mine job cuts

JOHANNESBURG - The National Union of Mineworkers demands urgent intervention from the mineral resources and labour departments to save over 1,200 jobs at Limpopo's Venetia diamond mine.

This comes as Venetia Mine faces a two-year production pause as De Beers cuts costs.

NUM says it will fight the decision by De Beers to halt production at Venetia Mine and issue a Section 189A notice, threatening the livelihoods of permanent employees at Venetia Mine and De Beers Sightholder Sales South Africa.

Venetia is the largest diamond mine in South Africa and accounts for 40% of local production and more than 10% of De Beers' global production.
