Oil prices threaten to undermine fuel levy relief

JOHANNESBURG - Rising oil prices are threatening to undermine the positive impact of government's fuel levy relief in November.

In the Medium-Term Budget, the Finance Minister announced the fuel levy relief.

It will temporarily fall by R3 per litre for Diesel and R1.50 per litre for petrol from 4 November.

The price change will be based on the month's average oil price and the dollar-rand exchange rate.

According to the latest Central Energy Fund data, 95 unleaded petrol is set to rise by R1.27.

With the R1.50 fuel levy relief, prices will fall, but only by around 23 cents per litre.

The relief will be more impactful for Diesel users.

Low sulphur diesel is set to increase by R1.24, but with the fuel levy relief, it will fall by around R1.76 per litre.

Both fuels hit record highs in October.
