Poor road conditions are bad for the economy: AA

The Automobile Association's Layton Beard says bad road maintenance is also a serious safety hazard.

JOHANNESBURG - The poor condition of our roads has a negative impact on the economy.

This is according to the Automobile Association's Layton Beard.

Beard says bad road maintenance is also a serious safety hazard.

"I think we need to acknowledge the situation in terms of potholes, not only in Gauteng but throughout the country, is extremely poor," he said.

"Roads are engineered to ensure there’s a free flow of traffic both motorized traffic and for people who walk. There’s a lot of thought that goes into designing and engineering a road.

"It is very expensive. The reason we need these roads to be in a good condition, it is because it is such an important part of our economy."
