Rand holds firm as Consumer Price Inflation eases

JOHANNESBURG - The rand has traded near its strongest level since March, benefiting from a weaker US dollar and firmer precious metal prices.

The local currency held around R16.10 to the dollar, supported by improved risk sentiment and stronger commodity prices.

Investors are also weighing the latest inflation data for clues on the interest rate outlook.

Annual consumer inflation slowed to 4.3 percent in July, down from 5 percent in June and below market expectations.

However, underlying inflation pressures remained elevated, with core inflation rising for a fifth straight month.
