Retail sales cool off in August

JOHANNESBURG - Retail trade sales in South Africa rose 2.3 percent year-on-year in August, according to Stats SA.

It was driven mainly by strong growth in so-called other retailers.

These are retailers in books and stationery, jewellery, watches, sports goods, second-hand goods and other specialised stores.

Hardware, paint and glass stores, and general dealers also boosted the sector.

However, sales dipped 1.2 percent compared to July.

Despite these mixed trends in the retail sector, the overall outlook for consumers seems to be more positive.
