Rising gambling addiction sparks calls for tougher regulation

JOHANNESBURG - The gambling sector is doubling down on growth.

But many punters are gambling with their lives.

The National Gambling Board reported the industry generated R75-billion in revenue last year, that's almost 1 percent of GDP.

But with that, it reported a sharp rise in those seeking help with gambling addiction.

This was one of the topics discussed at last week's Responsible Gambling Summit.

There are also concerns of underage betting on online platforms.
