SA confident about finances but cautions about debt

JOHANNESBURG - South Africans are feeling financial confidence, despite higher interest rates and record high petrol prices.

That's according to the 2026 Sanlam Financial Confidence Index.

But the report has found that consumers are taking less risks with credit.

Home loan ownership has fallen from 21% to 14% year on year with personal loans, overdrafts and vehicle finance also down.

Behavioural scientist Kele Boakgomo said South Africans are defending what they have.
