JOHANNESBURG - Is South Africa's tourism sector finally turning the corner?
Recent figures reveal an uptick as Tourism Month bursts into full swing.
Airports are buzzing, hotels are filling up and the iconic sites from Table Mountain to the Kruger National Park are once again echoing with the chatter of excited visitors.
Thandiwe Mathibela from SA Tourism, says the industry recorded over five-million visitors to the country from January to June.
Mathibela says there's also been an increase in domestic travel.
“Between Jan and June, we have seen close to 5 million people arrive in SA. Fair share is for those who are not from SA. A 14% increase in the number of trips SA people have taken. 3.8 million of those are holiday trips," she says.
She says people go to different provinces for different things.
So what are the plans to keep this momentum going until the December tourist season?
