Transnet's coal line shows signs of recovery

JOHANNESBURG - There are further signs of improvement in South Africa's rail network.

One-hundred-and-sixty-five Transnet coal trains made deliveries at the Richards Bay Coal Terminal last week.

Improved locomotive availability and tighter security measures have helped boost coal volumes.

It is put shipments on track to reach 65 million tonnes by the end of the year.

Transnet Freight Rail is expected to move more than 170 million tonnes of freight this year, up from around 140 million tonnes in 2022.

While bulk commodities such as coal, iron ore and manganese are recovering, industry experts say general freight and container volumes remain a major issue.

Government is banking on private rail operators and increased private sector participation at ports to help lift rail freight volumes to 250 million tonnes by 2029.
