US-China talks significant - expert

JOHANNESBURG - Dialogues between Washington and Beijing are a step in the right direction.

This is according to Mohamed Cassimjee of Global Compass. 

United States President Donald Trump has concluded his final round of talks with Xi Jinping, wrapping up his state visit to Beijing.

Cassimjee said such engagements between the two countries hold great significance and cannot be underestimated. 

This as tensions between them two has an impact globally, he said.

“This is the first visit after nearly a decade by a United States leader to China. It's a reflection of China's growing economic and political importance globally," he said. 

Cassimjee added, "The United States also recognises that it needs to have strategic and peaceful relations with China.  But China also needs the United States. The United States is its largest trading partner as well.
