Vodacom fires 630 staff, contractors over fraud

JOHANNESBURG - Telecommunications giant, Vodacom, has fired over 630 employees and contractors for fraud.

The dismissals come after the company investigated around 8,000 cases of malfeasance within the company.

In a statement, Vodacom says it has zero tolerance for fraudulent activity on networks where it operates.

It says it took appropriate action to protect its customers in all of the DRC, Egypt, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa and Tanzania.

It used advanced technology to detect internal and external fraudulent activity from April 1 2023 to March 31 2024.

The cases were reported and identified through various channels, including direct reports received from customers, service providers, online reports, referrals from businesses, the fraud management system and external whistle-blowing.
