JOHANNESBURG - The cost of staple foods at the top of shopping lists has increased by nearly R600 in three years.
This for 17 items monitored by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group. They range from maize meal to white and brown bread.

The steep increase in their prices is indicative of the continuing financial strain facing many South Africans.
ENCA reporter Heid Giokos went to the supermarket to see just what she could buy for R500
