Crime in SA | Lack of faith in police service

JOHANNESBURG - Communities have lost faith in law enforcement agencies.

That's according to criminologist Lufuno Sadiki.

She says people are reluctant to report crimes because they know nothing will be done.

"Our police officers lack training and capacity. With regards to law enforcement, you need to be able to work with communities in order to prevent crime and protect civilians," said Sadiki.

"So there is a lack of capacity and lack of resources, understaffed as well as lack of training in investigative capacity. And in order to solve this, the law enforcement needs to rebuild the relationship with communities.

"Because if we are being honest, communities know who's committing crime," she said.

"But because of police lack of activity as well as inability to prevent crime, the community is reluctant to work with the police in solving these crimes because they know nothing is going to happen."
