National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola is now set to join Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and 12 police officers in the dock on 13 May, after appearing in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court over the controversial R360-million SAPS tender. Masemola faces four counts linked to the Public Finance Management Act, while the state says it has built a strong case and SAPS insiders are describing the matter as a defining test of institutional integrity.

In Johannesburg, the NPA has, for now, declined to proceed with the Emmarentia road rage case, where a 58-year-old suspect had appeared on murder and attempted murder charges after a fatal shooting following a minor crash. Prosecutors say police investigations are still continuing, in a move that is likely to draw sharp public scrutiny.

Residents in Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Free State are being urged to prepare for heavy downpours, with warnings of severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and localised flooding. Emergency services are on alert, motorists are being cautioned to avoid low-lying routes, and rough coastal conditions are also expected to raise risks at sea.

In Durban, protests over undocumented immigrants have intensified, with demonstrators calling for the shutdown of foreign-owned shops and Ngizwe Mchunu demanding deportations.

In Cape Town, a burglary at the home of Jerome Booysen has left Bellville South rattled after cash, jewellery and luxury items were stolen from the alleged gang figure’s property.

Abroad, US-Iran ceasefire talks remain in limbo as both sides warn they are ready for war, with Islamabad diplomacy still hanging in the balance and Washington saying Vice President JD Vance is prepared to return to Pakistan to push talks forward.

The United States is also dealing with the fallout from the court defeat over Trump tariffs, with refunds now looming for affected importers after the Supreme Court struck down swathes of the duties as illegal.
