Khumalo tells Parliament Gauteng SAPS members ‘moonlighting’ for cartels

CAPE TOWN - Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo claims highly trained combat members of the South African Police Service are moonlighting for criminal cartels.

During his testimony before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee on Thursday, the former Political Killings Task Team leader, painted a picture of a highly compromised police service.

Khumalo told Parliament that he found severe decay within the police service, adding that cartels were tipped off before planned police takedown operations.

“Whatever that we were doing now in this covert operation would find its way to the cartel. Even the vehicles with registration plates that were used by the team were on social media,” he told Parliament.

He said his team had collected information and identified that highly trained combat members of SAPS in Gauteng moonlight for the cartels.

In November, alleged drug cartel member and attempted murder accused Cat Matlala told Parliament that he employs about 12-14 protectors who are former special task force members.

Khumalo will continue giving evidence on Friday.
