JOHANNESBURG - As winter approaches, weather patterns will shift countrywide.
While some regions will experience increased rainfall, others are likely to face drier conditions, raising concerns about potential wildfires.
The South African Weather Service says rainfall distribution moves to the south-western parts of the country during winter, leaving the north-eastern parts dry.
SAWS predicts lower than normal rainfall this year, but this doesn’t mean other parts of the country should relax.
In an article published in December, Working on Fire Managing Director, Trevor Abrahams, said last year’s fire season broke records, with 2,750 firefighters dispatched, thousands of hectares destroyed, and 34 people killed, including many firefighters. Mpumalanga was the most affected.
The SA Weather Service provided these tips for the fire season.
• Pay attention to weather warnings, especially when alerts have been issued
• Do not start unnecessary fires
• Never ignore fires
