Ward demarcations fuels local government election prep

JOHANNESBURG - Momentum is building ahead of the anticipated local government elections.

With political parties scrambling to get their candidates ready. The Municipal Demarcation Board has handed over its final lists to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The list consist of electoral wards up for grabs and informs the IEC in preparation for the elections.

The board's Thabo Manyoni says population movements necessitates the redrawing of  ward boundaries.

This creates is own challenges as all registered voters have to be fairly spread.

Manyoni says consultation for the demarcations started in April 2024.

Elections are set to take place sometime between the 2 November 2026 and January 2027.

Elected councillors are responsible for improving communities and delivering services to everyone living in their area.
