Johannesburg goes electric: City unveils EV charging station

JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg is plugging into the future.

As more South Africans make the switch to electric vehicles, the metro is moving to keep up.

City Power has unveiled its first electric vehicle charging station at its Booysens head office.

“We are opening 14 now here at City Power. The second phase will see the ones that are said to be supercharging," said Joburg mayor Dada Morero.

"They will charge in a shorter time. We will be introducing those in the near future.”

The aim is to signal a clear shift towards a cleaner, smarter future.

With plans to cut costs, reduce emissions and modernise its operations, this marks an important first step in transforming how Joburg powers its growth.

The project, developed with international partners, is being positioned as a key part of Johannesburg’s long-term energy strategy.

The city says it's part of a broader plan to roll out charging infrastructure across the city while also transitioning its municipal fleet.

But with infrastructure vandalism a persistent problem, protecting these sites will be critical.

“We have a responsibility to ensure that where we roll out, the infrastructure is well secured,” Morero said.

Electric vehicle drivers have welcomed the move, saying it makes owning an EV more practical.
