More than just cars: Drive4Her motorcade calls for change

CAPE TOWN - In South Africa, a woman is murdered every two to three hours. Women and children continue to face rape and abuse, often at the hands of people they know and trust.

In December 2025, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared gender-based violence and femicide a national crisis and disaster. Yet, violence against women and children continues.

Drive4Her has launched a nationwide motorcade, bringing together car enthusiasts to raise awareness and call for action.

“I started Drive4Her because I myself am a victim of gender-based violence. When you experience something like that so personally, it really tugs at your heart," said founder Melissa van der Walt.

"We need to start taking action because we can’t sit in silence any longer."

All funds raised will go directly to the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children, which supports survivors of abuse.

The event also included self-defence classes, equipping women with skills to help protect themselves against potential attackers.

But the reality is that perpetrators of violence are often known to their victims.
