Climate report | 2024 ranked one of the warmest years on record

JOHANNESBURG - Last year, Africa experienced a series of extreme weather events.

This led to intensifying hunger, insecurity, and displacement, impacting every facet of socio-economic development.

These are just some of the findings of the State of the Climate in Africa report by the World Meteorological Organisation.

Dr Ernest Afiesimama, the organisation's Regional Programme Manager for Africa, said temperatures are above averages and that the last decade has been the warmest on the continent.

"There's been a prolonged drought on the continent, particularly in southern Africa, that has led to widespread growth failures, food insecurity and significant challenges," he said.
