Environment Month | A call for citizens to minimise marine pollution

JOHANNESBURG - Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister Barbara Creecy has urged citizens to reduce marine pollution by adopting sustainable practices such as reducing littering, participating in beach clean-ups and recycling materials. 

This call to action is particularly relevant during June, which is Environment Month in South Africa, when the country reflects on the importance of its extensive maritime territory bordered by the Atlantic, Indian and Southern Oceans.

Recent adverse weather conditions, including heavy rains in the Eastern and Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, have caused significant destruction and loss of life, with these events being traced back to oceanic origins. 

The Director of Ocean Research in the Department of Environmental Affairs, Ashley Johnson discussed this with eNCA.
