JOHANNESBURG - Hindus are celebrating Diwali on Sunday.
It's the festival of lights and usually culminates with fireworks.
The National Council of SPCA's is urging people to think about pets before lighting noisy crackers.
Pets and their owners usually face firework anxiety and stress.
Jacques Peacock from the NSPCA said SPCA's across the country remain on high alert.
"We encourage people to report the unlawful discharge of fireworks," he said.
"Each person is responsible for their pet. If you expect fireworks it's your responsibility to ensure that your pet is safe and that your pet is as calm as possible."
Peacock said pets should be brought indoors, in a secluded area.
"If you're animal is conditioned to a certain sound of noise, put the sound on to try and calm the animal down.
"Your pet looks to you for safety and comfort."
