Joburg gardens host wildlife in wake of climate-driven storms

SPRINGS - Johannesburg storms may pass in hours, but for wildlife, the damage lasts far longer.

From flooded nests to injured animals seeking refuge in backyards, climate change is reshaping emergencies on an unsettling scale.

So what can one do when nature shows up at the door?

"The problem that we experience directly with climate change in our work is the seasonal change. We know our busy season is a certain time, we know what the impacts were, and we expect them," said Dirk Engelbrecht, Wild Serve CEO.

"Now what's happening is we find out that it's a month or two early, we are actually getting to a point now where we are saying we don't have a season anymore, its a year-round problem where animals are at risk."

As climate extremes become the new normal, how we respond may determine whether wildlife survives the storm or disappears with it.
