From legends to rising stars, a jazz weekend awaits Cape Town

JOHANNESBURG - Cape Town is known for its majestic mountain peaks watching over the city skyline.

But for one particular weekend at the end of March each year, this tourist attraction transforms into a stage of world-class music.

The Cape Town International Jazz Festival returns for its 23rd edition bringing with it a rich line-up of jazz legends, soul maestros, and rising South African talent.

Since its commencement in 2000, the festival has grown into Africa’s premier celebration of music, culture, and hospitality.

More than just a music event, it offers an immersive experience where audiences can soak in an atmosphere of pure sophistication.

Because of the festival’s enduring legacy, Festival Director George Jones said innovation remains key.

“This is where the element of intrigue and discovery becomes important. We’ve brought in artists who will truly blow people away, while also honouring legends who deserve to be celebrated and welcomed back,” Jones.

Over the years, the festival has hosted global icons such as Lauryn Hill, Dave Koz and Earth, Wind & Fire, among many others.

South Africa’s own musical giants including Hugh Masekela, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Ringo Madlingozi. Mafikizolo, Black Coffee and the late Zahara, have also graced the stage.

Last year’s edition marked an emotional return for Lira on a major event, following her recovery from a stroke in 2022.

The festival also welcomed Ari Lennox, drawing excitement from younger audiences.

Jones said this year they are leaning towards attendees being able to curate their own experience.

Locals including Manana, Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, Jazzworx and Thukuthela, Scorpion Kings, Rorisang Sechele, and legendary Abdullah Ibrahim widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest pianists are set to perform alongside international acts such as Jacob Collier, Yellowjackets and Jasmine Myra,

Mabuse expressed gratitude for his return to the stage at the CTIJF saying he has a lot in store for his fans.

“For me to be on this festival is an honour because I have not been there for quite some time. When I was asked I jumped to the opportunity. I have done quite a lot of festivals, but this one is illusive. People will hear new things,” he said.
