Nandi Nyembe’s family bands together as they mourn her passing

JOHANNESBURG -  As the funeral of veteran actress Nandi Nyembe draws closer, the family has banded together to be strong for each other. 

This is according to Nyembe’s grandson Jabulani Nyembe, who describes the past few days since her passing, as very emotional. 

“We are trying our best to stay together and hold each other up in high spirits, but it is difficult. 
As we draw close to the funeral and hold this memorial, emotions are very high, but we still stay strong through the process,” he said. 

Colleagues, family, and friends of the 75-year-old veteran of stage and screen gathered at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg to honour her life and legacy.

This place comes full circle for her, having started her professional journey there in 1970s

She had joined the Market Theatre as a bar attendant. By 1980, she joined the cast of Sophiatown, directed by Malcolm Purkey, paving the way for a soaring career that would span over five decades, 

captivating audiences in iconic roles on Yizo Yizo, Zone 14, and Soul City.

She's been described as “the soul of South African storytelling” and a “teacher and guide” in the arts
