The Pillowman : When fiction turns dark

JOHANNESBURG -  The dark and gripping thriller 'The Pillowman' is coming to the stage in Johannesburg.

The Pillowman has been a global sensation since its debut in 2003, winning various prestigious accolades including two Tony Awards.

This production goes beyond traditional theatre by integrating a pre and post show art exhibition, that promotes South African talent and deepens the play’s haunting themes.

Ildi Kungl the director and plays 'Tupolski' said the play is a balance of darkness, comedy, and visual art.

Meanwhile, state manager and assistant director Gugu Madlabane said their goal with the play was to keep the stage as minimalist as possible, so that they could also bring some focus on the artwork because it is such an integral part of the story, of the show.

One of the actors in the play Wentzel Lombard encouraged people to come watch.

"It’s not every day that you get an opportunity to see something as powerful as The Pillowman, for such a long run at a venue like Theatre on the Square, so that is why we’d encourage people to come and watch it," he said.
