Riky Rick honoured in Free State

JOHANNESBURG - The Riky Rick Foundation has described Rikhado Makhado's energy as a force that continues to inspire people long after his passing.

The foundation was honouring the rap star's legacy by planting a memorial forest in Rustlers Valley in the Free State later this month.

The 'Boss Zonke' hitmaker died by suicide in February 2022.

His mother, Louisa Zondo, said the memorial forest was in line with her son’s energy.

"The memorial forest just absolutely accords with the energy of Riky Rick, the energy of doing things that move and inspire people and therefore they last because they are meaningful to people.

“So when we plant trees, we connect to the earth, we speak stories about the trees through the process of planting the trees and when we do it together, we collectively, we build a forest.

“The forest will give us fruits that come from the trees. They will regenerate the environment through the power of trees. They give us more of the oxygen that we need. They clean the air. Now there is also a legacy that is represented by building a forest, the legacy of Riky Rick. This is a legacy of inviting everybody to see that they belong, to see that they shine, that they are whole, even in spite of their troubles."
