People from all works of life embraced the experience by rubbing shoulders with some of the heavyweights operating the state-of-the-art polar research vessel.

The Port of East London was a hive of activity this weekend with residents coming from far and wide to learn more about the SA Agulhas II.

Marine Environment Research director Ashley Johnson said, "I think the ocean's economy, for us, is a big plus and it has been pushed very hard by the President and his GNU cabinet I think it is going to create enough careers in which people have not necessarily thought of before. There are areas of science, there are issues around ocean engineering, how do we protect our coastline, through climate change projections that they are facing there are things like biotechnology and bio discovery which is a different feel that is only emerging now through ocean species."

The SA Agulhas II will sail to Cape Town and is expected to arrive on Monday.
