SA podcasters given six months to develop self-regulations

CAPE TOWN - Podcasters have six months to develop self-regulation measures and report back to Parliament.

The Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies convened stakeholders to explore the regulation of the fast-growing media sector, amid mounting calls for oversight.

Khusela Diko, Chairperson of the committee said government wanted to ensure there was a right to recourse for the growing industry.

“Ours is not to regulate content, what we seek to do is to ensure there is a right to recourse. If there are take down instructions, we need to ensure community guidelines on the platforms are sufficient.”

Diko said they expected the key role players in the industry to lead the process.

“As Parliament we have done our job. We will await direction from them on how to legislate. Within the next six months I'm hoping they will come back to Parliament with the code of conduct and avenues where people can complain if issues arise.”
