JOHANNESBURG - Only 32 of Johannesburg’s 58 municipal swimming pools have opened for the summer.
The City blames ageing infrastructure, vandalism, and budget cuts.
However, others say the decline is a symptom of poor planning and neglect and communities are left with fewer or no safe recreation spaces.
Those who have conducted oversight visits to the pools say it is a sad state of affairs.
In communities still waiting for their swimming pools, the season has begun without a splash.
Although the City insists all the pools will open by December, for many, that is just way too late.
