JOHANNESBURG - Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, better known as Makhadzi, received a hero’s welcome at OR Tambo International Airport yesterday on arriving home after winning Best New International Act at the BET Awards in California this past Sunday.
Scores of fans, family and friends waited at the airport for the superstar, eager to shower her with support.
Speaking to eNCA’s Theodore Mashele, the Ghanama hitmaker said,
“Looking at where I started, everything, until this day, I am so happy. I’m nervous, I’m speechless but I feel inside that I deserve this. I worked so hard for this. I’m just speechless. It’s unbelievable. but it’s happening.”
The Limpopo-born star was not the only South African winner. Grammy award winner and Water’ hitmaker, Tyla, triumphed in the Best New Artist and Best International Act categories.
"I did not prepare anything, but I just want to say thank you so much to my Tygers, my family, my team. Thank you to BET for always pushing the culture," Tyla said in her award acceptance speech.
Newly-appointed Sport, Arts and Culture minister, Gayton McKenzie, took to social media platform X to laud the two women, adding “we will not be a ministry that will be content with congratulating artist and creatives only, but will go out and unearth more Tyla’s and Makhadzi’s. Help us find more future superstars.”
The Black Entertainment Television Awards is an American award show founded in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate and honour black and underrepresented people in the entertainment industry.
