South Africans eating more seafood than ever

JOHANNESBURG - South Africans are hooked on seafood, but they don't want any fishy business in how it's sourced.

A new report shows consumption rose to 350,000 tonnes in 2024.

But, over half of all consumers want to assurances the nets are clean.

And now, major retailers are under pressure to improve traceability and transparency.

Kirtanya Maharaj, Manager for Outreach and Awareness at WWF's Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative, said more than half of consumers now want clear proof their fish is sustainably sourced.
