But they warn that shelters are often overwhelmed, as resources are stretched thin and operations rely heavily on public donations.
While the SPCA provides a vital safety net, reducing the burden requires community support and responsible behaviour from pet owners.

Terrified pets often flee from their homes in a panic, become disorientated, and struggle to find their way back.
The organisation is appealing to the public to reconsider the use of fireworks entirely, noting that domestic and wild animals — including dogs, cats, horses and birds — suffer extreme distress from the bright flashes and explosive sounds.
Anyone who encounters an injured, lost or distressed animal during the festive season should urgently contact their local SPCA’s emergency number.

How pet owners can keep their animals safe
- Arrange a responsible pet sitter or boarding facility early. Choose someone trustworthy who understands your pet’s routine, or book with a reputable kennel/cattery well in advance.
- Leave detailed care instructions, including feeding schedules, medication, behaviour notes and vet contact details.
- Secure your home properly. Close windows, check gates, fix loose fence panels, and ensure there are no gaps where a frightened animal could escape.
- Leave their favourite toys, blankets and bedding to keep them calm in your absence.
- Stock up on food, medication and emergency supplies to last your entire trip.
- Update microchip and tag information and ensure the contact number that should be answered is listed.
- Notify your neighbours and let them know your pet may be home with a sitter. They can help keep an eye out for any escape attempts, especially during fireworks.
