There are the obvious things we inherit.
Our Culture. Family name. A recipe nobody has ever bothered to write down. The stories that get told at family gatherings, often with a few details added each time. The song that somehow gets everyone at the function onto the dance floor.
And then there are the things we don't always think of as heritage.
The television theme song you know from the first few notes. The character your whole family had an opinion about. The line from a show that somehow became part of the way people spoke. The programme that takes you straight back to a particular couch, a particular house and a particular version of South Africa you experienced.
Television has been sitting in our living rooms for generations, quietly recording us.
Our accents. Our humour. Our neighbourhoods. Our clothes. Our family dynamics. The things we argue about, laugh about and sometimes aren't quite ready to talk about.
And somewhere along the way, the shows we watched became part of the stories we inherited.
Maybe some of our heritage has been sitting in our watch history all along.
