Madiba’s legacy kept alive with Western Cape Langtafel

CAPE TOWN - From a simple soup kitchen to a giant Langtafel, the Community Chest said this year's Mandela Day celebration is all about keeping Madiba's legacy alive.

Hundreds of people, including those living on the streets, are sharing not just a hearty meal, but a moment of dignity, hope and togetherness in Cape Town.

Richard Noor, Community Chest Western Cape chairperson, said they are honoured to continue Madiba’s legacy.

"If Madiba was going to be 108, he would have been 10 years old when Community Chest was formed. His legacy is our responsibility to live and to continue.

“Otherwise, all the sacrifices that he would have made would have been brought to naught. So, as the Community Chest, we're here to serve, and today we decided to go big.

“Last year we started with a soup kitchen in Bree Street, and last year we teased about the langtafel. And I'm overwhelmed by the amount of langtafels that we have here today and the amount of people sitting side by side being served, not having to hustle for a plate of food,” Noor said.
