New Zealand bans Tiktok from lawmakers' devices

Global action against TikTok, owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, kicked off in earnest in India in 2020

WELLINGTON - New Zealand has joined the growing list of countries to ban TikTok from lawmakers' devices.

That's as security fears grow over the social media platform.

Canada, Britain and the US have already enacted their own ban.

Western nations are worried data from the app could be viewed by Chinese officials.

ByteDance, the owners of TikTok, says employees in China have accessed details of US accounts but has denied handing over data.

US President Joe Biden is threatening to ban the app outright unless TikTok separates from ByteDance.
