Government officials at the temporary repatriation processing centre in Musina say a bus carrying Malawian nationals returned to the facility just minutes after departing.

"The information we got was that he just said he was feeling hot, temperatures are up, then he took off his shirt, and then from there he collapsed," said Albert Matsaung, Home Affairs projet lead.

"When the emergency services went to them, they confirmed the person had passed on, and he’s a Malawian national.”

The Department of Home Affairs says the number of migrants remaining at the repatriation centre had dropped to below 2,000 by midday on Monday.

Humanitarian organisations such as Gift of the Givers maintain a significant presence at the centre to assist migrants.

On Tuesday, the portfolio committee on Home Affairs will visit both the repatriation centre and the Beitbridge border post.
