JOHANNESBURG - Pressure is mounting between Washington and Pretoria.
The Trump administration has introduced new visa restrictions targeting South African officials, adding another layer of tension to an already strained relationship.
Washington says the measures are linked to allegations of discrimination against white South Africans, as well as concerns surrounding South Africa’s Expropriation Act.
Pretoria has rejected those allegations.
But international relations analyst Kingsley Makhubela believes the dispute could extend far beyond visa restrictions.

Makhubela says the latest move could form part of a broader challenge to the South African government’s international standing.
“The Trump administration is setting up South Africa for a much broader attack on the legitimacy of the South African government,” Makhubela says.
He says one possible consequence could be increased pressure on South Africa’s participation in the African Growth and Opportunity Act, or AGOA.
According to Makhubela, Washington could use what it regards as South Africa’s failure to meet conditions set by President Donald Trump as justification for further restricting its participation.
But he says there is a bigger geopolitical picture at play.

South Africa’s strategic position at the southern tip of Africa, particularly its proximity to the Cape of Good Hope shipping route, could become increasingly significant amid developments in the Middle East and disruptions to global trade routes.
For Makhubela, this means Pretoria faces a delicate geopolitical balancing act.
He argues that South Africa should avoid viewing its international relationships as a choice between the United States and emerging global powers.
Instead, he says, Pretoria needs to navigate an increasingly multipolar world without becoming overly dependent on pressure from any one side.
