DIKENI - Universities are being urged to do more to tackle gender-based violence and ensure students are safe on campus.
An Eastern Cape GBV activist said many young women continue to live in fear at institutions of higher learning, where cases of abuse remain a serious concern.
The University of Fort Hare has recorded more than 100 reported GBV cases so far this year.
Institutions of higher learning have been grappling with gender-based violence for years.
But with many incidents involving students taking place off campus, addressing the problem and ensuring accountability can be challenging.
Following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address on gender-based violence last month, the university acknowledged that there are institutional conditions requiring attention.
It has committed to making its campuses safer for women.
