Carrim's lawyer argues businessman is not a flight risk

JOHANNESBURG - Suliman Carrim’s lawyer insists the businessman should be granted bail, arguing that he is presumed innocent and poses no flight risk or threat to the administration of justice.

Dawie Joubert told the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court that Carrim has a verified fixed address, substantial assets, longstanding business interests and no previous convictions or other pending cases.

The court has reserved judgment on Carrim’s bail application to scrutinise transcripts, following allegations by the State that he has been tailoring his evidence.

The former ANC official was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport last week after allegedly failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission despite being subpoenaed.

He has said he was travelling abroad for spiritual purposes.
