DA wants COJ R10bn wage deal scrapped

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance wants the City of Johannesburg’s wage deal with municipal workers scrapped.

The over R10-billion agreement was based on a politically facilitated agreement.

The party has taken legal action to block the deal, calling it financially unsustainable and a further strain on the city’s fragile budget.

DA Joburg mayoral candidate Helen Zille said the politically facilitated agreement was approved without a feasibility study or disclosure of which service delivery projects would be cut to fund the deal.

Meanwhile, the municipal workers’ union SAMWU is threatening to shut down and halt services in parts of Johannesburg.
