Eastern Cape communities vow to continue action over illegal immigration

KUGOMPO CITY - Some Eastern Cape communities are vowing that they will not remain silent if illegal immigration persists.

Authorities declared the province’s unofficial June 30 protests as calm.

However, some residents say the migration crisis runs much deeper and won't be resolved with just a day of protests.

Demonstrations in the Eastern Cape were largely peaceful.

But chaos erupted in some communities where protesters went door-to-door with the intention of removing undocumented migrants.

Three men were arrested on suspicion in Nompumelelo, KuGompo City.

In Mdantsane, an angry group of protesters accused a resident of pointing a firearm at them after they had tried to shut down a foreign national’s spaza shop.

The police presence played a vital role in incidents that could have turned ugly.
