Eersterust pupils lose learning time as unsafe school forces limited attendance

PRETORIA - Pupils at Eersterust Secondary School in Pretoria are losing valuable learning time as unsafe classrooms and closed toilets force the school to limit attendance.

Years of infrastructure problems have been compounded by vandalism and inadequate security, leaving parts of the school unsafe.

Now, parents and community members are calling on the Gauteng Education Department to urgently intervene and restore proper learning conditions.

Residents say intruders are able to enter the grounds, vandalise buildings and even sleep inside classrooms, taking away what should be a safe environment for learning.

With asbestos classrooms and toilets closed, some grades are now taking turns attending school, while others are leaving early.

Parents want to know when these conditions will be fixed so their children can return to full school days.

Community members say they are being let down by the Gauteng Education Department.

The department has promised that mobile classrooms will be delivered on 12 October.

But it says vandalism and damage to public infrastructure remain broader challenges affecting the school.

Ultimately, parents want what every child deserves -- a safe school and a full day of learning.
