Hundreds of migrants stranded as repatriation delays continue

MIDDELBURG - Nearly 200 Zimbabwean nationals have been stranded at a taxi rank in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, for the past three days.

The group, which includes women, children and the elderly, has been waiting to return home.

However, taxi operators have refused to transport them until payment is made upfront.

The migrants say living on the streets has been difficult and are pleading for assistance.

Meanwhile, scores of Malawian nationals remain stranded at a temporary repatriation processing centre in Musina, Limpopo.

Many have spent up to three nights sleeping on buses or on the ground while waiting to return home.

At the same time, a deadly crash near the Beitbridge Border Post has renewed concerns over driver fatigue and the safety of repatriation transport.

The driver of a bus transporting passengers from KwaZulu-Natal to a repatriation camp in Musina was killed when the vehicle overturned on the N1. Eleven other people were injured.

The assistant driver says he did everything he could to prevent the crash, but was unable to avoid it.
