IEC makes final call to voters ahead of registration deadline

PRETORIA - The Electoral Commission is making a final appeal to eligible South Africans to register ahead of the November local government elections.

Nearly 24,000 voting stations are open across the country and will close at 5pm, giving voters one last opportunity to register or update their details.

More than three million registrations were recorded during the first voter registration weekend in June.

The IEC says turnout has been encouraging so far, with more than 99 percent of voting stations opening on time.

The commission is reminding those who have not yet registered that there will be no further opportunity to do so after this weekend, and is urging them to register either at their voting station or through the online registration portal.

“We remind voters there will be no more opportunity for registration after tomorrow, either at registration stations or on the online portal,” said IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo.
