IEC processes hundreds of objections ahead of election results announcement

JOHANNESBURG - The Electoral Commission says it is working to ensure credible local government election results.

IEC officials are processing hundreds of election-related objections, including the MK Party’s call for an audit of the eThekwini results.

Voter turnout currently stands at 45 percent, while the commission says it has experienced no technical glitches during the week.

The IEC is expected to announce the results on Sunday, once all objections have been considered.

"I know that our voter turnout numbers are sitting at 45 percent. This is a very good number in terms of, you know, the checks and balances, the controls to say where you stay; that's exactly where you need to vote," said the IEC's Vusi Vuma.

"So we did not have any glitches technically, and we are looking forward to tomorrow when the commission will be announcing the results. At this point, we are currently busy with objections.

"The objections closed yesterday; we received hundreds of them, and it's part and parcel of the process. We're going to process each and every one of them, and make sure that, you know, by the time we announce the results, everyone is happy."
