Impeachment Committee weighs Ramaphosa's objection to Madonsela

CAPE TOWN - Parliament’s Impeachment Committee Chairperson Makashule Gana says legal services are considering President Cyril Ramaphosa’s letter objecting to the appointment of Thandazani Madonsela as the committee’s evidence leader.

Ramaphosa objected to Madonsela’s appointment after MPs voted in favour of his selection.

The President believes Madonsela harbours a grievance against him. Ramaphosa removed Madonsela as an appointee to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) following the 2022 Chief Justice interviews.

Madonsela also recently advised the ANC on matters relating to the impeachment inquiry. Ramaphosa says this could place him at a disadvantage.

Committee members have accused Ramaphosa of using the objection to stall and derail the process.

MPs are also planning an inspection in loco at the Phala Phala Wildlife Farm.

The committee’s draft terms of reference indicate that witnesses who appear before it may be questioned by either the President or his legal representative.
