Khampepe Commission asks for extension to complete inquiry

JOHANNESBURG - The Khampepe Commission has asked the President for a four-to-six-month extension to complete its investigation into alleged political interference in the prosecution of apartheid-era crimes.

The TRC Cases Inquiry was initially scheduled to run until mid-December.

Commission spokesperson Lionel Adendorf says several factors have contributed to the request, including names that emerged during testimony, outstanding documents requested from government departments and institutions, and delays caused by a recusal application.

Adendorf says the Commission also needs more time to hear testimony from former president Jacob Zuma, who is reportedly ill and has been in contact with the Commission’s lawyers.

A date for his appearance has not yet been confirmed.

The extension would allow the Commission to cross-examine Zuma and witnesses who testified last week, while investigating further the individuals named during proceedings.

Adendorf says the Commission is seeking a reasonable opportunity to complete its work and fully investigate the allegations.
